Biography
Ahn Bo-hyun is a South Korean actor and former amateur boxer who has risen to prominence through his versatility and commanding screen presence. From his early days as a Seoul Collection runway model to his career-breaking performance as the villain Jang Geun-won in Itaewon Class (2020), Ahn has established himself as one of Korea's most compelling leading men. He is known for his dramatic range across genres—from the noir intensity of My Name (2021) to the gentle romanticism of Yumi's Cells (2021–2022) and the fantasy rom-com Pretty Crazy (2025).
Early Life and Athletic Background
Ahn Bo-hyun was born on May 16, 1988, in Busan, South Korea. He graduated from Busan Sports High School, where he trained rigorously as an amateur boxer. Competing in the 64 kg light welterweight division, he won a gold medal at a national boxing competition.Sunio, Patti (May 13, 2020). Retrieved May 16, 2020.
His boxing career ended due to recurring finger fractures and his parents' concerns about the sport's dangers. After watching Yoo Oh-sung's boxing performance in the 2002 film Champion, Ahn developed a new dream: to become an actor. He enrolled in Daekyeung University's Department of Modeling and began his entertainment career on the runway.
Career
2007–2014: Modeling Debut and Transition to Acting
Ahn debuted as a model in 2007, walking prestigious Seoul Collection runways.Oh, Ara (March 22, 2016). "[bnt pictorial] Actor Ahn Bo-Hyun, 'As One Says'". BNTNews. Archived from the original on July 22, 2020. Retrieved March 27, 2016. He made his acting debut in 2014 with minor roles in KBS2's Golden Cross, MBC's Two Mothers, and tvN's My Secret Hotel.
2015–2019: Supporting Roles and Rising Recognition
Ahn gained his first significant exposure through supporting roles. In 2015, he appeared in MBC's The Dearest Lady as Lee Bong-gil. His breakthrough in mainstream television came in 2016 with KBS2's mega-hit Descendants of the Sun, where he played Sergeant Im Kwang-nam of the Alpha Team alongside Song Joong-ki. That same year, he starred opposite INFINITE's Hoya in the film Hiya.
He continued building his filmography with diverse roles: the web drama My Only Love Song (2017), MBC's weekend drama Hide and Seek (2018), the action web series Dokgo Rewind (2018) opposite EXO's Sehun, and tvN's romantic comedy Her Private Life (2019) as art critic Nam Eun-ki.
2020: Breakthrough with Itaewon Class
Ahn's career reached a turning point with JTBC's Itaewon Class (2020). His portrayal of Jang Geun-won—the arrogant, pitiable chaebol heir—earned him widespread critical acclaim and public recognition. The role brought him multiple nominations: Best New Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards, APAN Star Awards, and a win for Best New Actor at the MBC Drama Awards for his simultaneous work in Kairos. He also received the Rising Star Actor award at the Brand of the Year Awards and Korea First Brand Awards.
2021–2022: Leading Man Status
Ahn transitioned to leading roles with remarkable momentum. In 2021, he starred in two defining projects: Netflix's noir thriller My Name as detective Jeon Pil-do, and tvN's beloved romance Yumi's Cells as Goo Woong, Yumi's first boyfriend. His gentle, nuanced performance in Yumi's Cells shattered his tough-guy image and showcased his emotional range. At the 8th APAN Star Awards (September 29, 2022), he won the Excellence Award, Actor in an OTT Drama for both performances.
In 2022, he landed his first title role in tvN's Military Prosecutor Doberman, playing Do Bae-man, a military prosecutor seeking revenge. He also made a cameo in tvN's Adamas and joined the cast of tvN's variety show The Backpacker Chef as a fixed host alongside Baek Jong-won. He was also a cast member in the youth travel variety Young Actors' Retreat.
2023–2024: Continued Success
Ahn starred in tvN's fantasy romance See You in My 19th Life (2023) as Moon Seo-ha, a stoic executive scarred by childhood trauma. He also appeared in the historical war film Noryang: Deadly Sea (2023) as Commander Yi Hoe, and made a cameo in the crime thriller I, the Executioner (2024).
In 2024, he returned to television with SBS's Flex X Cop, playing Jin Yi-soo—a immature third-generation chaebol heir who becomes a detective. The role allowed him to blend comedy, action, and character growth.
2025–Present: Current Projects
Ahn stars in the 2025 fantasy rom-com film Pretty Crazy (also translated as 2 O'Clock Date or Devil Moved In), opposite Girls' Generation's Lim Yoona. He plays Gil-goo, an unemployed softie who tends to a woman possessed by a demon every night. The role marks a deliberate departure from his intense image. Director Lee Sang-geun noted, "I wanted to show Ahn's genuine, clumsy, and affectionate side that hasn't been revealed before."
For this performance, Ahn won the Best New Actor award at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards in November 2025.
On April 1, 2025, Ahn signed an exclusive contract with AM Entertainment, joining Kim Woo-bin and Shin Min-a under the same agency.
He is also attached to an upcoming project titled Spring Fever (TBA).
