Episode 4 of Young Sherlock starts with Sherlock rushing to the mental health facility where his mother, Cordelia, is staying. He asks Cordelia if she has been speaking with someone and learns that there are others spying on his mother. He breaks into a wall and finds a listening device inside.
As the doctors and the guards come barging into the room, Sherlock sneaks his mother out. Cordelia saves Sherlock from being attacked by a nurse, giving her an electric shock before the two escape.
Sir Hodge threatens to hang Shou'an to death and asks her to reveal the truth about her involvement in the murders of the professors. The man is about to order the executioner to kill Shou'an when Mycroft stops him. Mycroft claims that they need Shou'an alive, as she is the only link between them and the person who is behind these murders.
The next morning, James shows up at the Holmes family house in Appleton Manor and is surprised to see the collection of items there. Sherlock finally arrives too and is reminded of the time when he was sent to a boarding school when he was younger.
Sherlock takes his mother inside and introduces her to James. James realizes that Cordelia is looking after her deceased daughter, Beatrice. Sherlock tries to ignore the fact that Cordelia is not doing okay, but James insists on informing Mr. Holmes and asking him to come back home.
When Cordelia runs out looking for Beatrice in the lake, Sherlock asks their steward, Mr. Crowle, to call for their village physician, Dr. Maltby. Meanwhile, the director of the mental asylum asks the guard to look for Cordelia after he lets her escape. Dr. Maltby checks up on Cordelia while this is happening, and gives her some medication to help her relax.
In private, James tells Sherlock that since someone was listening to Cordelia's conversations, she's still connected to the Oxford murders. The two men try to determine what the phrase "bird's claw" means, as it was the last thing Shou'an told him before she was arrested.
Sherlock suddenly realizes that the "bird's claw" most likely refers to the cane Professor Malik uses, as its handle was claw-shaped. Sherlock asks Mrs. Crowle to tend to his mother while giving Crowle strict instructions to deny anyone entry into their house.
Sherlock and James go back to Oxford to visit Mycroft. They talk to Mycroft about Professor Malik and his cane, suggesting that their mother saw the man in the asylum. Mycroft refuses to trust Sherlock though.
James and Sherlock wonder why Professor Malik vanished if Shou'an was in custody. Sherlock asks to meet Shou'an and learns that she saw Professor Malik listening to recordings of Cordelia talking to their doctors at a safe house.
Sherlock tells Sir Hodge that Professor Malik was not in the room when Shou'an planted a bomb. He claims that Professor Malik was betraying him and convinces Sir Hodge to allow Shou'an out of prison so she can take them to the safe house. Once there, they find the real Princess Shou'an kidnapped.
Sir Hodge apologises to the real princess and learns that Professor Malik had already moved to a different hideout.
At the same time, the fake Shou'an takes Sherlock to the room where she saw Professor Malik listening to the recordings. Inside, Sherlock and James find tapes of all the treatment sessions that were conducted on Cordelia at the mental asylum. Sherlock gets scared when one of the recordings ends with Cordelia screaming and crying for help after being given shock therapy.
Sherlock and James discover a transcript of all the conversations that Cordelia had with her visitors and, in particular, a transcript of a meeting with a lawyer called Lawson Jaggers. They learn that the recording of this conversation was tampered with and someone was trying to keep a secret involving Cordelia. Sherlock tells Mycroft about this and asks his brother to look for Professor Malik.
Meanwhile, the fake Shou'an takes advantage of the chaos and escapes police custody. Just as a cop is about to attack, the fake Shou'an's friend kills the cop to rescue her.
Mycroft, Sir Hodge, Edie and the constables go looking for Professor Malik's new hideout based on what the real Princess Shou'an said. However, Sherlock and James sneak into Mr. Jaggers' house and find his dead body there.
James notices signs of a struggle on Mr. Jaggers' hands and concludes that the man was killed and hanged. Sherlock and James go to the cops to report the murder when the constable gives him a wire from Mr. Crowle.
Sherlock rushes back home to save his mother from being kidnapped by the mental asylum staff. Mrs. Crowle threatens to use a gun on the director of the asylum, who backs off, leaving Cordelia alone.
Sir Hodge and Edie arrive at Abdon Abbey, where Professor Malik was hiding. Sir Hodge finds the professor and threatens to shoot him. He asks why Malik betrayed him, when the latter claims that he did not want Hodge to take credit for his accomplishments. Sir Hodge is about to kill Professor Malik when the latter drugs and kills the man.
The episode ends with the constables finding Sir Hodge's dead body while Mr. Silas Holmes finally returns to Appleton Manor.
The Episode Review
This episode slowly connects the murders of the professors to the Holmes family and I am sure there is a reason why the fake Shou'an involved Sherlock in the crime in Episode 1. It is possible that Esad wanted Sherlock to be arrested for murder as he was trying to link Cordelia to the crime. Since Sir Hodge is dead now, we would not know for sure if it was his doing to cause harm to Mycroft.
While that theory cannot be true, as Sir Hodge was betrayed by Professor Malik, who is hiding something big. With Cordelia being involved in the case and Sherlock's father, Silas, returning home, we can sense that the Holmes family is going to become more heavily involved in the case.
Sherlock finding a button by Mr. Jaggers' dead body and not telling James anything about it makes me wonder if this could be the start of their rivalry…
